Harare, (New Ziana) – The Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has warned that starting from Tuesday, heavy rains accompanied by strong winds and lightning will hit most parts of the country until next weekend.

Indications are that some areas may receive over 50 millimeters of rain in 24 hours, raising the risks of flash floods, hazardous road conditions with poor visibility, landslides, and rockfalls, especially in already saturated regions.

In a statement, the MSD cautioned that the heavy rainfall could potentially damage infrastructure and urged the public to exercise extra caution during this period.

“Expect heavy rainfall (50 mm and above). In some areas, strong winds, thunder, and lightning are expected nationwide from Tuesday, January 20, to Saturday, January 24, 2026. During this period, there are dangers associated with strong winds, fallen trees, blown-off rooftops, and lightning.

“We urge the public to mend rooftops, secure loose items, shelter animals, and trim overhanging branches. The public should watch for blown-off rooftops, loose debris, fallen trees, open drains, and water-covered potholes due to strong winds,” it warned.

During thunderstorms, the MSD urged people to stay indoors, unless it is an emergency, while warning the public to avoid machinery and open vehicles like tractors, stay out of open areas, refrain from using taps or showers, steer clear of flooded zones, and monitor updates on official MSD platforms.
