Harare, (New Ziana) – Zimbabwe is intensifying efforts to position itself as a competitive destination for medical tourism, as the Government moves to develop world-class health facilities capable of attracting international patients while strengthening the national economy, the government said on Wednesday.

In a post on its National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2), it said the initiative seeks to tap into the rapidly expanding global medical tourism market by offering affordable, high-quality healthcare services.

“Zimbabwe is stepping up its game in medical tourism! The government, under President Emmerson Mnangagwa, is working to develop world-class medical facilities and attract international patients. This move aims to tap into the growing global medical tourism market and boost the country’s economy,” the government said.

The strategy, it said, will not only improve health outcomes, but also generate foreign currency, create jobs, and reduce the need for citizens to seek medical treatment outside the country.

Central to the plan is the provision of specialised medical treatment aimed at patients looking for cost-effective, yet high-standard care.

The Government said it is prioritising the upgrading of hospitals, modernisation of medical equipment, and the adoption of international best practices to ensure local facilities meet global standards.

Competitive pricing is expected to be one of Zimbabwe’s strongest advantages, with medical procedures projected to cost significantly less than in many regional and international destinations, without compromising on quality, it added.

Victoria Falls, already a world-renowned tourism hub, has been identified as a strategic location for medical tourism development with plans already underway to integrate advanced healthcare services with the city’s hospitality infrastructure, allowing patients and their families to combine treatment with leisure and recovery in a world-class environment.

The medical tourism drive forms part of Zimbabwe’s broader Vision 2030 agenda, which aims to transform the country into an upper middle-income economy through innovation, investment, and value-addition across key sectors.

Government officials say the initiative signals a new chapter for the health sector—one that positions Zimbabwe as a regional and global player in medical tourism while improving healthcare access for its citizens.
