KWEKWE — Zimbabwe Cricket chairperson Tawengwa Mukuhlani has urged cricket associations to
include women in their structures to have inclusivity at the top level.
Speaking during the unveiling of a sponsorship package by Kalra Group to Rhinos franchise in
Kwekwe last Saturday, Mukuhlani urged both Midlands and Mashonaland associations to include
women in their structures.
I am surprised to see both Midlands and Mashonaland Association boards are made up of men
only, not even a single female member.
We should embrace women in leadership roles. You should have women in your boards which will
reflect inclusivity in cricket. You have five board members each, surely you have space to co-opt
women.
We want to see female umpires, scorers and in other leadership roles, this will grow the game in all
departments, we already have lady Chevrons and franchise teams doing well,” he said.
The ZC chairperson was however, not impressed with the Zimbabwe women U19 team's
performance at the just ended ICC U19 Women World Cup in South Africa.
It was not a good performance by the women U19 team in South Africa at the U19 World Cup. But
for us it was an indicator of where we are in terms of development. What the U19 women managed
to show us as women is that we are far too behind other nations in terms of development. We need
to invest more in ladies cricket at school level. We need to invest more in technical expertise at that
level.
Yes, we are disappointed but like I have said, it shows us that…. we are at the lower end of the
chain and we need to up our game, do more programmes. We also need to do more school cricket in
that area, said Mukuhlani.
The national women U19 team was knocked out of the World Cup at the group stage after having
failed to win a single match, in a five team group knock out phase.
