CHIREDZI—Tragedy struck Chiredzi District as relentless rains led to devastating floods, resulting in the loss of three lives and the isolation of entire communities.
Tragically, two people lost their lives to lightning strikes, while a child drowned in a deep pit. The floods have left approximately 40 families homeless, with many homes destroyed.
Officials have reported significant disruptions, with essential services—including hospitals, banks, and government offices—becoming unreachable.
Lovemore Chisema, the Chiredzi District Development Coordinator, confirmed the severity of the situation in the district.
“Most of the water bodies are now full, and as the rains continue, downstream communities are facing severe flooding,” he said.
Chisema urged residents to remain vigilant, stressing the importance of avoiding flooded areas and refraining from crossing swollen rivers to prevent further fatalities.
Chiredzi South has been particularly hard hit, as overflowing rivers and the controlled release of water from dams such as Lake Mutirikwi have worsened the situation.
Local authorities are working tirelessly to assess the damage and provide relief, coordinating closely with stakeholders to deliver food and essential items to affected communities.
Community members have expressed their desperation amid the crisis.
Patricia Mukwesha, a local farmer, lamented: “We haven’t been able to leave our homes for days. The floods have cut off our roads, and we’re worried about our crops. There is no way to get to the market or even to the hospital if someone gets sick.”
Similarly, Samuel Nyathi, a father of three, shared his concerns: “It’s heartbreaking to see our children living in fear. The heavy rains have washed away everything. We rely on our neighbours for food since we can’t reach the shops. I appeal the government to help us before it gets worse.”
The continuous rainfall has raised water levels in nearby rivers and dams, threatening the Lowveld region. Efforts are underway to monitor conditions, with an emphasis on preparedness and disaster response in these flood-prone areas.
As the community grapples with the immediate impacts, officials hope for a swift resolution and the restoration of access to vital services for the beleaguered residents of Chiredzi South.
