SHURUGWI – A 64-year-old shebeen queen of Montdor North, Bonsor, Shurugwi, was allegedly set
ablaze by one of her patrons for refusing to give him beer on credit and is now at Shurugwi General
Hospital receiving treatment.
Evans Chirawo Mataga (38), who is also a co-tenant to the shebeen queen allegedly doused the
complainant with petrol and then set her ablaze.
Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said on June 15 at around 2pm, Mataga
went to the woman’s residence where she operates a shebeen where she sells alcohol illegally.
“He requested for beer on credit and the complainant refused citing that he already owed her
money,” Insp. Mahoko said.
Mataga became furious and set her on fire. Other patrons managed to put out the fire and rushed
her to Shurugwi hospital but not before she had sustained serious burns.
The police has since arrested the suspect and investigations are progressing.
In another incident, a 29-year-old Kwekwe man was found in a pool of blood along a dirt road in
Mbizo high density suburb.
On June 14, Nicodemus Choga (29), a known firewood vendor in Mbizo was seen lying in a pool of
blood at round 6pm by a passers-by who anonymously called the police.
“The body had multiple stab wounds all over. Preliminary inquiries established that he had been last
seen at a nearby tuck-shop having an altercation with some men who were wearing black leather
jackets,” Insp. Mahoko said.
