Harare, (New Ziana) – A security guard at Tebekwe Mine in Shurugwi was killed on Friday night after being attacked by an artisanal miner who had trespassed into the company’s claim through an underground tunnel.

Two illegal miners were arrested following a fierce confrontation in the tunnels, after security personnel fired warning shots to repel the intruders. The Zimbabwe Republic Police in Shurugwi confirmed the arrests, identifying the suspects in custody as Munyaradzi Gonye and Clever Magura. The deceased security guard has been named Tirivanhu Muradzikwa.

Tebekwe Mine Chief Security Officer, Derick Dube, said authorities are working closely with the police to apprehend the remaining suspects, who are believed to still be underground.
He explained that the intruders’ exit points have been sealed, but the complex layout of the mine—with multiple levels—has made locating them challenging.

“We managed to scare them away after firing warning shots, and they retreated, but we only managed to arrest two. About three others are still underground. The mine is large, and with many levels, it has been difficult to locate them, but all illegal exit points have been sealed,” Dube said.

He added: “We will also pursue the other suspects in Shurugwi town, as we did previously when we arrested a notorious illegal miner, Jamba, who is now in jail.” Tebekwe security officers are also investigating other suspects implicated by those already in custody.

Despite the threat posed by illegal miners, Tebekwe Mine has continued with its empowerment initiatives, ceding some claims to women, youth, and war veterans. The company has also maintained its philanthropic efforts in Zvishavane, Shurugwi, and Gweru, particularly during the festive season.
