Mt Darwin North Zanu PF aspiring legislator Labbany Munemo is constructing and
rehabilitating school ablution facilities at Mukoma primary school in the Dande valley in Mt
Darwin after health authorities threatened to close the learning centre.
Mukoma primary is just one of many schools in the valley with a problem of toilets which
threatens many schools and business points.
Munemo said the community’s loose fine sand soil makes it difficult for structures to endure
length periods of existing especially those built without adequate cement and building
reinforcements, which is the situation with many toilets at schools in the constituency.
He has since brought architectures to assess how best they can come up with strong structures
at the school.
He said some of the toilets roof and floors are almost collapsing putting pupils’ lives in
danger.
Again, schools infrastructure is scarce in the constituency, thanks to government for availing
devolution funds to councils, at least a number of these institutions will be established soon.
Munemo said the constituency, which borders with Mukumbura River to Mozambique still
have some pole and dagga schools that needs to be upgraded.
“I have already bought the cement for the construction of standard toilets at Mukoma. I do
not mind, winning or losing, our community need to improve. If l win, which l am guaranteed
of, I will then work on the rest of the schools
“I think it is possible to have a safe learning environment for our children here in the valley if
we put to good use the constituency development fund and the devolution funds, working
hand in hand with our council,” said Munemo.
The Dande Valley has poor soils and rainfall pattern. It is also characterised by severe water
shortages and perennial droughts.
Many have to dig stream bank wells for domestic and industrial use water, scrambling for the
special liquid with both wild and domestic animals.
Munemo, while he is also drilling boreholes, has embarked on a cluster and in some instances
household dip well project whereby he is digging dip wells for communities and at the
elderly and vulnerable people’s homesteads.
“I would want them to get the precious liquid, within a reasonable walking distance and if all
goes to start income generating horticulture projects capitalising on the available water to
improve their livelihoods,” Munemo added.
