MUTARE-Authorities in Chipinge District are grappling with a complex and risky rescue operation after ten villagers became stranded on an island in the swelling Save River—and are now actively evading the teams sent to save them.

The individuals, from Mahenye Village in Ward 23, have been marooned for four days on Lisungwe Island, where they reportedly conduct farming and fishing activities. Despite the rising water levels of Zimbabwe’s largest inland river, the group is reportedly refusing rescue efforts.

Chipinge District Development Coordinator William Mashava, who chairs the district’s civil protection committee, confirmed the deployment of a multi-agency team. The response includes the Zimbabwe National Army, the Zimbabwe Republic Police Sub Aqua Unit, and private experts with engine-powered boats.

“It is unfortunate that the 10 people are running away from officers deployed to rescue them,” Mashava stated. “We are unsure if this is resistance, but they should not be there, and we appeal for help to evacuate them.”

Mashava noted this is a recurring problem, revealing that similar warnings were issued last year but ignored. The continued occupation of the flood-prone island highlights an ongoing challenge for disaster management officials, who must balance urgent rescue operations with community members who are reluctant to leave.

The situation remains precarious as the Save River continues to rise, increasing the danger to the villagers even as they avoid the help being offered.
