According to the acting Provincial Education Director for Mashonaland Central, Dr Themba
Mangwiro, the goal of the International Day of Education is to spark discussion about how to
strengthen education as a public endeavour and unleash the potential in everyone to
contribute to collective well-being.
We took the event to Mt Darwin, because we want to conscientise the whole of
Mashonaland Central about education and we cannot talk of Mashonaland Central leaving out
the rural areas. We want to conscientise children, parents and everyone else so that they know
the value of education, Dr Mangwiro said.
Some of the schools, which attended the celebration on the day include Ruya High School,
Darwin Primary School, Tabex Primary School and Kandeya Secondary School.
Following the United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres' message for the
International Day of Education observed on 24 January 2023, education is a fundamental
human right and it is the bedrock of societies, economies and every person’s potential.
Now is also the time to end all discriminatory laws and practices that hinder access to
education, he said.
