GOKWE – Holy Cross High School at Gokwe Centre, will soon open its doors to learners after
construction resumed at the end of lifting of Covid 19 restrictions last year which had stalled
progress.
The Church of the Province of Central Africa Anglican Diocese of Central Zimbabwe continues to
compliment government efforts in the education sector. When operational, it will be the Anglican
church’s second high school in the Midlands province after Patrick’s High School in Chiwundura.
The church is also planning to construct more schools in Kadoma, Gweru, Kwekwe and Kariba.
In an interview, the Anglican Diocese of Central Zimbabwe Bishop Ignatius Makumbe said he was
happy with the progress at Holy Cross High School which will help decongest some of the schools in
Gokwe.
“… in Gokwe, we have so much pressure from the local community and the (Education) Ministry are
on our heels so we are working hard to make sure that that school is up and running so that we
reduce the pressure we have,” he said, adding that they will also accept learners from satellite
schools around Gokwe.
The construction of the school resumed last year after it was stalled by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Anglican church plays a prominent role in the education sector together with the Roman
Catholic with Manicaland having the highest concentration of both primary and secondary schools.
Bishop Makumbe said some of their schools were taken over by rural councils.
“In some provinces, the local authorities are coming and suggesting that we take back the schools
and develop them better.
“The church had a vision and local authorities jumped in and they did not perform as we expected
them to do. If they approach us and ask us to take back the schools, we will gladly take them back
and develop them,” said the veteran educationist.
