THE annual Gwanda Mayor’s Cheer-Fund has raised a bar, aiming to raise US$ 20 000, up from the US$10 000 which raised last year. The funds will be set aside to help vulnerable people and groups in the mining town.
The collaborative effort of the business community, private and public stakeholders and residents will see over 250 vulnerable people benefiting.
This year’s Cheer Fund will follow the format of a beauty pageant and will be hosted on November 16 then followed by a business seminar on December 6, all part of the fundraising to help vulnerable groups.
The Mayor of Gwanda, Alderman Thulani Moyo, said this year’s Cheer Fund had been scaled in recognition of the vulnerable groups and individuals.
“It’s time to launch the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund because the festive season is upon us. We have families in our community who will not be able to enjoy the spirit of Christmas due to financial hardships. The fund aims to support those most in need. Mobilisation is now in full swing and we want help from our community,” said Alderman Moyo, adding that they were involving a number of partners to ensure that the Cheer Fund leaves a mark.
“The need for social welfare is great in our communities, and we will continue to seek partnerships to support those in need. Every contribution, no matter how small, makes a difference,” he said.
Stakeholders committed to donate several grocery items comprising foodstuffs, clothes and money. The local authority has invited other stakeholders to come on board as they continue to mobilise resources that will go towards assisting the underprivileged.
The Cheer Fund team has set a target of US$20 000 with their deadline being December 1.
Gwanda Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund chairperson, Methuseli Moyo, emphasised the importance of casting a wide net to engage more funds and donations.
“We want to leave a mark. This year we are going all out to ensure that we mobilise as many resources as possible. We are encouraging everyone to get involved, whether by donating or helping us reach more people. Gwanda has been united since time immemorial and such spirit, I am sure, is still prevailing,” said Methuseli Moyo.
The launch of this year’s Mayor Cheer Fund was at Mount Cazelet Lodge, and the business community, residents rallied to grace the occasion.
To uplift the mood of the occasion local artists Zhezhingtons, Bry Eze, Umfanomsotho, Ufasimba and Miracle Records entertained the guests.
