MUTARE– Manicaland’s young swimming athletes made a significant splash at the recently concluded Zimbabwe Junior Nationals, bringing home 20 medals.
Among the standout performers was Paquita Bryer, who achieved an impressive medal tally of one gold, three silver, and one bronze in the relay events. Her exceptional performance highlighted her commitment and skill in the pool.
Lewis Mushoweshiri also excelled, competing in the boys’ 15-16 years’ category and securing the second-best aggregate. His strong showing contributed to the overall success of Team Manicaland.
In addition, Yvonne Mubaiwa, just 12 years old, qualified for the finals in the 50m butterfly and served as an alternate in both the 100m breaststroke and 50m freestyle finals. Her participation at such a young age is a promising sign for the future of swimming in the region.
Alvin Mufute also made a mark by securing the second-best aggregate in the boys’ 13-14 years’ category, further demonstrating the depth of talent within Team Manicaland.
Duduzile Mthethwa, the chairperson of Manicaland swimming, praised the athletes for their outstanding performance and dedication.
“Congratulations to Manicaland’s junior swimming athletes on their impressive showing at the Zimbabwe Junior Nationals. We are proud to announce that our athletes scooped a total of 20 medals, showcasing their dedication, talent, and hard work,” Mthethwa stated.
Mthethwa expressed gratitude to the Border Dolphins Club for their ongoing support and training, which played a crucial role in preparing these young athletes.
“We extend our deepest gratitude to Border Dolphins Club for their continuous support and training, which helped to produce these outstanding representatives,” she concluded.
