GWERU – A 40-year-old landlord who stabbed his female tenant twice in the head with a screwdriver while demanding his monthly rental, was sentenced to four months in prison when he appeared at the Gweru Magistrates Court last week.

Jonah Banda of Ascot high density suburb escaped jail term by a whisker after the magistrate wholly suspended the four-month sentence of the assault charge on condition that he does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.

The court heard that on October 1 at around 1pm, the tenant was busy sewing clothes in the sitting room when the landlord Banda stormed into the room.

“The accused person asked for his rentals and the complainant told him that she had no money. The accused person got angry. He pulled a screw driver from his pocket and stabbed the complainant twice in the head,” said the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ).

The tenant made a report to the police, leading to the arrest of her landlord.

Meanwhile, a 36-year-old Gweru man was sentenced to pay a fine of US$120 or four months in prison for physically abusing his wife.

The NPAZ said on October 29 at around 11pm, the man and his wife were sleeping in their bedroom when he noticed some keys in the blankets.

“He asked her why the keys were in the blankets and she explained that the tenant had asked for spare keys and she had forgotten to return them,” said the NPAZ.

The husband then claimed that the keys belonged to her boyfriend, leading to a heated argument. He punched and kicked her several times all over the body.

A report was made to the police and the accused was arrested and arraigned before the Gweru Magistrates Court facing charges of physical abuse.
