GWERU City Council has started repairing its traffic lights, which have been dysfunctional for almost
a decade.
GCC spokesperson Vimbai Chingwaramusee said the decision was taken after a long-standing
dispute with a contractor Emobuild who did the initial traffic construction was concluded.
Chingwaramusee said they expect to have covered the whole city by year end.
“The arbitration between Emobuild and City of Gweru in regards to the traffic lights is over and as a
local authority we are now repairing them.
“We have started with the one at Amtec and we will move to major traffic lights in the city.
“We hope that we will be through with the repairs in the entire city by the end of the year,”
Chingwaramusee said.
The city has over the years been attacked for failing to repair the traffic lights, which has resulted in
accidents.
One motorist Brilliant Madhoro said he was happy that GCC had started doing something concerning
traffic lights.
“They must continue repairing all traffic lights in Gweru the one they have repaired has resulted in a
smooth flow of traffic resulting in less congestion.
Madhoro said the robot has also made life easier for school children who cross the Lobengula and
Second Streets intersection.
Gweru has been involved in a long-standing dispute with Emobuild, which won the tender to put up
new traffic lights in the city.
Council was not happy with the work done by Emobuild as the traffic lights functioned for a short
time resulting in the local authority taking Emobuild to the courts.
