THE country’s largest gold miner, Freda Rebecca Gold Mine, is on a growth
trajectory since takeover by Kuvimba Mining House, which has so far injected US$22
million investment in capital projects.
Gold production is on the increase at Freda Rebecca Gold Mine, with production
now averaging 80 000 ounces per annum. In its first quarter, which ran from April to
June 2023, the miner said it increased output to 603 kg compared with 592 kg during
the same quarter last year.
‘We had a good quarter producing over 19 thousand ounces, which is marginally
higher than what we did for the same quarter in 2022.
Despite power outages, we still managed to process a higher tonnage,” said Patrick
Maseva Shayawabaya, FRGM Managing Director
Kuvimba Mining House which is 65 percent owned by the Government and 35
percent by private shareholders has been instrumental in ongoing expansion since
acquiring the gold mine in 2020.
‘When you look at capital projects that have happened since Kuvimba took over.
That mill number 3 project, the return water dam and penstock facility, the thickener
project, the exploration programme. We are talking of 22 million dollars (investment)
that has happened between 2021 and 2023 and to us as management it
demonstrated commitment by the shareholder to improve capacity of the business
and prepare it for further expansion,” Shayawabaya said.
With 1800 employees including contractors, young miners are benefitting from Freda
Rebecca’s growth through increased career advancement opportunities.
“They sponsored me to enroll with the School of Mines; they gave me a full
scholarship, at current I’m a learner miner. During my attachment, I was able to get
my MBL. I’m focusing on my full blasting licence. I am really grateful for the
opportunity.
‘I am thankful to the management of Freda Rebecca Gold Mine, a member of
Kuvimba mining house for this golden opportunity that they have given me to study
at Zimbabwe School Mines in which I’m doing Mineral Processing and Extractive
Metallurgy, where I’m currently in my final year,” said Takudzwa Alistair
Mupangavanhu, a learner miner
The gold producer began exploration within its lease area last October as it moved to
expand the life of the mine.
Freda Rebecca Gold Mine is optimistic production will remain consistent thereby
positioning the country’s largest gold mine to contribute to the US$12 billion mining
vision.
