New Ziana > Ilanga > Disability champion gets surprise party

Nkomwa Foundation Trust Director,Pick Nkomwa, was the toast of the day last Friday, after villagers from various parts
of the province threw a surprise party for him in honour of the philanthropic work his
organisation is carrying out to those with disabilities, especially in marginalised
areas.
The man, who has stood boldly advocating equality and an inclusive environment for
People with Disability (PWDs) in Gwanda was honoured by villagers who managed
to source funds and surprised him for his aristocrat work.
Evelin Dube, who hails from Beitbridge and was one of the organisers of the surprise
party said the opening of Nkomwa Foundation Trust was a blessing that will be
cherished forever.
Ever since he set his feet in these premises, that’s when I made a U-turn on
negative thoughts which deem people with disability (PWD) as second class citizens
in our society.
In our midst PWDs were truly neglected and marginalised until Nkomwa vowed to
be their servant. After facing a number of challenges with my son, Nkomwa Trust
Foundation chipped in and my son’s life has never been the same.
“We do not want this to go unnoticed,” said Dube.
Dorrica Churu, who comes from Mopane, said NFT had been a shoulder to lean on.
My son has a disability and each time I knocked on several doors in search of help
some offices shunned me. Only NFT managed to listen to my plea. Today my son
has obtained knowledge and life skills, all courtesy of NFT. I applaud them for that,"
said Churu.
Addressing the gathering, Nkomwa said the surprise party had left him speechless.
“I really don't know where to start because I am full of joy today. I am over the moon
though I almost fainted when you all thronged here shouting ‘surprise.’
“May the Lord continue to bless you all? I am glad people in our area now
understand that PWDs deserves equity in all environs that we live. Let's not tire to
help them as we all advocate for inclusivity. My colleagues have been discriminated
and labelled all kinds of names that we seek to fight against,” said Nkomwa.

The celebratory tone saw NFT long serving youth Mr. Mthandazo Ndlovu divorcing
his crutches as he rocked the podium, while aged mothers ululated as they also took
to the dance floor.
