Chiredzi- A Councillor from the opposition political party, Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC), representing Ward 19, Lovemore Muchono, is currently on the run after confessing to a heart-wrenching incident involving the alleged death of an ECD learner last week.
The burial of the young victim, Steadfast Makondo, is scheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday) at Gonakudzingwa in Chikombedzi.
Muchono operated a school transport service for ECD learners.
According to his confession, Muchono unintentionally left Steadfast inside his vehicle with the windows closed after a school drop-off. As he went about his day, the child, tragically forgotten, suffocated due to the heat.
In his written confession, Muchono stated that he was unaware that the child had not disembarked and only discovered the tragedy during his lunch break. Disturbingly, in an attempt to conceal the incident, he reportedly transported the body to a secluded area known as Chitsanga Hill.
News of Muchono’s confession and subsequent flight has plunged the community into turmoil and grief.
“How can this happen again? We believed that the past had taught us valuable lessons. This feels like a nightmare we can’t escape,” a local parent expressed despairingly.
In response to this tragedy, parents are rallying for immediate reforms in child safety protocols for school transportation. They are demanding stricter regulations, including mandated headcounts, timely communication alerts when children are unaccounted for, and comprehensive background checks for all transporters.
“This issue cannot be ignored. We need assurances that our children are safe and that those responsible are held accountable for their actions,” asserted a concerned mother, identified as Mai 2.
“This latest tragedy urges us to confront the systemic failures that have allowed these incidents to occur,” commented a prominent community leader. “We must unite to ensure that the safety of our children is the highest priority.”
The police are investigating the murder of Steadfast.
ZRP national police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi has urged parents and guardians to take greater responsibility for the safety of children, particularly primary and ECD learners.
Residents are grappling with the shock of this tragedy, which has revived painful memories of a similar heartbreaking incident in late 2021.
In that incident, three-year-old Celine Phiri and four-year-old Lynet Mukungati lost their lives due to negligence, emphasising the critical need for stringent safety measures during school transportation.
Residents are determined to drive meaningful change, vowing to work together to ensure the safety of their children is never compromised again. The sorrow and fear enveloping the community serve as stark reminders of the responsibility every adult has in protecting the most vulnerable.
