Limpopo, South Africa-Authorities in Limpopo have confirmed a serious Zimbabwe-bound bus accident along the N1 near Ingwe Lodge, which veered off the road and plunged into a ditch early Thursday morning.
The Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Transport and Community Safety, Violet Mathye, is expected to visit the crash scene as emergency teams continue rescue and recovery operations.
Preliminary reports indicate that the bus was travelling from Gauteng province en route to Zimbabwe. Officials have not yet confirmed whether all passengers were destined for Zimbabwe, nor have they released the exact number of people who were on board at the time of the crash.
Emergency responders remain on site, working to access the vehicle, which is still lodged in a ditch off the highway. The position of the bus has made it challenging to immediately determine the total number of occupants. Authorities have confirmed that the accident has resulted in multiple fatalities and several injuries, although the exact figures will be verified by a competent authority once assessments are complete.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
Traffic disruptions continue along the N1 corridor near the crash site. Motorists are being redirected to use the R523 route via Nzhelele as an alternative until the scene is cleared and the roadway is declared safe.
The Limpopo Department of Transport and Community Safety has urged road users to exercise caution and patience while investigations and recovery efforts are underway. Further updates are expected as more details emerge.
