Harare, (New Ziana) – The City of Harare has sounded an alert over increased flood risks across the capital following sustained heavy rainfall that has already caused flash flooding in several suburbs.

In a statement on Tuesday, the local authority said that it had been receiving daily reports of flooding incidents, particularly in low-lying and high-density areas.

Suburbs cited as most affected include Mbare, Highfields, Waterfalls, Warren Park, Budiriro and Glen Norah.

Council said it is working in close coordination with the Civil Protection Unit (CPU) to closely monitor developments on the ground as the rain season intensifies. Residents living in flood-prone areas have been urged to remain vigilant, regularly follow weather forecasts and act promptly on any flood warnings issued.

“The City of Harare, in collaboration with the Civil Protection Unit, is advising residents and property owners in low-lying areas to closely monitor daily weather updates, remain alert to possible flooding and take necessary precautions to minimize risk,” the council said.

The local authority acknowledged that flooding challenges in Harare are being exacerbated by an aging and poorly maintained drainage system, particularly in high-density suburbs and parts of the central business district.

Years of limited maintenance and delayed refurbishment of storm-water infrastructure have left many areas vulnerable during periods of heavy rains.

The city has appealed to residents to play their part by keeping drainage systems clear. Council warned that indiscriminate dumping of litter into storm drains is significantly contributing to blocked waterways and worsening flood conditions.

Residents have also been advised to exercise caution when driving during heavy rains, avoid parking vehicles under trees, and assist in clearing drains near their homes and businesses where possible.

Flash flooding has become a recurring problem in Harare during the current rain season, with city authorities stressing that collective action and heightened awareness are critical to reducing damage and safeguarding lives as rains continue.
