Hunting for gold in Gwanda

New Ziana > Ilanga > Hunting for gold in Gwanda

PEOPLE from different parts of the country have been flocking to this small town since its
establishment in search of job opportunities due to the gold deposits found in the region.
Small-scale mining activities have continued to uplift several households, whose lives have
been greatly transformed.
This reporter conducted interviews with several small-scale miners, some from as far as
Binga, who have made a decent living after joining others panning for gold in Gwanda.
Darlington Chirwa, who hails from Masvingo, said ever since he entered the mining sector,
he has been able to fend for his family back in Masvingo.
“It is not as easy as people think. We work day and night and it is very cumbersome, but
when at the mill you get a lot of grams, it’s worth every second we work there.
"I have been able to take care of my family back in Masvingo since I began working here,”
said Chirwa.
Another miner, Gilbert Maphosa, said from small-scale gold panning activities, he has
managed to open up a retail business and also build a house.
"l am grateful for having entered the mining sector here because without that, I would not
have built a house and opened up a business in town, which is run by my wife.
“At least my children can survive decently without major difficulties, that is what I have
always yearned for,” explained Maphosa.
Besides the miners, other businesses have been recording a boom because of the support they
get from the miners.
Getrude Moyo, who runs a canteen in rural Gwanda said she had been getting a lot of support
from miners, who come to purchase food after working hours.
"My business is doing well as I am making a lot of money on a day-to-day basis – thanks to
miners who support me," she said.
Gwanda Town Clerk, Priscilla Nkala, said that both small- and large-scale mining activities
were the backbone of the economy of Gwanda.
"Mining drives the economy of Gwanda. There are no industries here, but mining has
ensured sustainability of the town due to infrastructural development. However, on the other
hand EMA must play an important role in monitoring mining activities so that residents’
safety is ensured,” said the Town clerk.
